Polybutylene Pipes

In the late 1970’s an inexpensive new type of plumbing pipe made of plastic polybutylene resin emerged as an extremely popular alternative to copper piping.  Polybutylene pipes were not only very cheap to manufacture, but they were also easy to install.  Many homes during the building boom were plumbed using polybutylene pipe.  What all of those Georgia Plumbers didn’t know was that they were installing what is now widely believed to be defective pipes.

Plumbing Repair vs Replacement

“Do we have to get a new one? Can’t you just fix it?” Two questions we hear quite often from our customers.
Our home’s water distribution system, like other areas of our home, requires routine maintenance. When plumbing fixtures are not maintained properly or failed parts are not replaced promptly it puts stress on the other parts of the system causing undue wear and tear. Our technicians are trained to recommend the most cost effective solution to your plumbing problem and offer options when possible. Often we see customers wait and wait until that possible repair turns into a necessary replacement.

Drain Line Cleaning and Maintenance

Often the sewer lines and your home's drain lines are the most neglected item on a homeowner's maintenance list.
A home's drain system is a complex system of pipes and fittings connected together for the purpose of removing solid waste and waste water from your home.  It is also designed to provide a seal in order to prevent sewer gases from entering your home.

Sump Pump Replacement and Repair

What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a submersible pump that sits at the bottom of a sump pit, which is typically installed at the lowest point in your basement or crawl space. Ground water surrounding your home's foundation is channeled into a perimeter drain system installed at the base of the foundation. Water finds its way into the perforated drainpipes and is quickly diverted to the sump pit. The sump pump, which is triggered by a float switch, removes the water by pumping it to the nearest storm drain, dry well or detention pond. A sump pump turns on only when water inside the sump pit reaches a pre-determined level.

Different Types of Plumbing Pipes

Recognizing what type of plumbing pipes you have in your home will greatly assist in diagnosing and repairing plumbing problems.
The most common type of piping used for plumbing today are CPVC, PEX, copper and PVC.  Older homes in our area may have a variety of other types of waterline pipe.  Homes built before 1960 may have galvanized steel or cast iron drain pipe systems.
Below are the most common types of piping we see used in our area.
DWV (Drain/Waste/Venting) Piping  - These pipe types are typically used in the drain systems of your home.  They either connect to the city sewer system or your septic tank and carry waste from the home.

Drain Line Repair and Replacement

As discussed in our previous article, some drain cleaning and maintenance tasks can be safely completed by a homeowner.  But all drain line repair and replacement should be handled by plumbing professionals.  Errors in the repair or replacement of sewer drain lines may cause clogged lines, possible leaks and/or back-up of sewage into the home.  Be sure to call your plumbing pros at My Georgia Plumber in the event of a drain line replacement or sewer line repair.
